PAS 99

PAS 99 is a Publicly Available Specification that specifies common requirements for Management Systems that can be used as a framework for an Integrated Management System (IMS).

As more and more standards are developed that have Management Systems integrated in them, it is possible to end up with 'silos' of Management Systems that duplicate (and often are in conflict with) each other. To overcome this, the solution was to streamline the Management Systems and provide an IMS that 'sits on top of' the standard(s), so PAS 99 was developed.

PAS 99 is intended to encourage organizations with more than one Management System to view PAS 99 as the opportunity to achieve a single holistic IMS to enable them to more effectively run their operations.

PAS 99 takes account of the six common requirements for Management Systems standards outlined in ISO Guide 72; guidance document and also follows the Deming Cycle of:

  • plan;
  • do;
  • check;
  • act;
that all of the major Management Systems standards have adopted. These 6 common requirements are:
  • policy;
  • planning;
  • implementation and operation;
  • performance assessment;
  • continuous improvement;
  • management review

The adoption of PAS 99 should considerably simplify the process of assessment by both internal and external parties and allow organizations to reap huge internal benefits.

Note: It is not possible to be certified against PAS 99 as such but it can be used as part of another certified Management System (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 27001, ISO 20000, etc).
